The One Secret to Improve Your Social Media Experience

It is becoming complicated to avoid social media. We live a digitalized life. Over 80% of the population owns a mobile device, and 57% of them have more than one type of device. Some research has concluded that social media lead, in general, toward negative emotions. For example, a study demonstrated that Facebook users had an elevated feeling of envy.

Since we spend, on average, about 2.5 hours a day on social media, it seems to be important that our experience is positive. Otherwise, it would be seen as destructive behavior and self-inflicted pain. This leads us to ask; how can we improve our social media experience?

The one secret that can help you improve your social media experience is awareness

While limiting the usage of social media is the best recommendation; being aware of how social media is affecting you is very important if you want to improve your emotional state. Awareness is our ability to notice how we feel, how we react, and how we think regarding specific situations.

You can improve your awareness by practicing a few activities while you are on social media. Here are a few suggestions on how you can do this:

  • Next time you are on social media, observe your emotional state.
  • Every time you observe a negative emotional state, make a note of how you felt and what triggered that feeling.
  • When you observe yourself feeling negative emotions, shift your mind to something more positive by putting your phone down for a minute and take three deep breaths.
  • If you find yourself triggered by many posts from the same user, unfollow that person.
  • Clean your Social Media daily and only follow individuals who empower you or allow you to grow.

The key to experiencing positive emotions on social media is to be an emotion, aware user. An emotion aware user knows what triggers negative emotions and avoid those triggers. The more you will practice the identification of your triggers when you are online, the better you will become at avoiding situations that put you in a reactive mode. When you catch yourself going down that reactive mode while being on social media, shift your attention to something more empowering. Don’t forget; you are always in control of how you spend your time and where you focus your energy.
